We're urging all our supporters to sign this petition https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/sheffield-friends-of-the-earth-planet-over-profit
Target: Gill Furniss (Brightside and Hillsborough), Abtisam Mohamed (Central), Olivia Blake (Hallam), Louise Haigh (Heeley),Clive Betts (Sheffield South East), Marie Tidball (Penistone and Stocksbridge)
Ask your local MP to support a new UK law to protect forests and the rights of Indigenous Peoples and others around the world.
Precious forests around the world are being destroyed at an alarming rate. From the tropical rainforests of the Amazon and in Southeast Asia, to the Cerrado in South America, ancient trees and other habitats are being destroyed to make way for palm oil and timber plantations, vast soy fields and mega cattle farms. UK companies are profiting from global supply chains that destroy habitats worldwide, with devastating consequences for wildlife, the climate, and communities. We need a new law that requires UK companies to prevent harm to people and the environment in their supply chains, wherever they operate.
When we buy products often the supply chain is hidden and it is difficult to find out if the item contains ingredients grown in an unsustainable way. For example chocolate may contain cocoa and palm oil both of which can contribute to deforestation and destruction of habitats and communities. Coffee has never been more popular yet how many people buying coffee know where it has been grown and if it has been grown in a way that is fair to the environment and communities?
By demanding a new law, you’ll help transform how UK companies operate globally. Alongside affected communities and international partners, you’ll be part of a growing movement that prioritises planet over profit. And you’ll add your voice to thousands demanding that corporations are held legally accountable for the environmental harms and human rights abuses in their supply chains.
