Friends of the Earth has revealed that Apple is using tin from Indonesia that's wrecking the environment. This tin has been linked to the destruction of tropical forests, coral reefs and fishermen's livelihoods.
Sheffield Friends of the Earth and Young Friends of the Earth activists went undercover at Meadowhall on Saturday 6th July to raise awareness amongst customers. Our activists, Richard and John, left a trail of tags attached to Apple products asking if they contained tin from Bangka. The pair managed to speak to the store manager about the issue before leaving.
The latest statement from Apple is:
“Recent concerns about the illegal mining of tin from this region prompted Apple to lead a fact-finding visit to learn more....we are helping to fund a new study on mining in the region so we can better understand the situation.”
