Eco Build 2010

Shaun attended the Ecobuild exhibition in London to learn more about green buildings and sustainable homes. This was easy to achieve with over 1000 stalls and many lectures, workshops and presentations.

Some of the stalls to impress Shaun were demonstrating LED street lighting which is being used in Blackpool and office/factory LED lighting systems. Beside efficient lighting there were many displays of green roofs and green walls (pictured) which can help reduce flooding, keep cities cool in summer and warm in winter, and provide a habitat for wildlife.  On a similar theme, several companies demonstrated their Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) for storing and reusing rain water.

Other interesting products ranged from
sun pipes to direct daylight in to dark areas such as prison cells and hotel corridors to homes made from straw bales (pictured). A number of insulation products were available from sheep’s wool to hemp insulation.

There were the usual companies selling energy generating systems like ground and air source heat pumps, solar PV systems and solar water heating systems. A range of chemical companies also had products to make solar systems and radiators run more efficiently.

Besides the product displays, there were lots of workshops , lectures and presentations on a host of subjects from how to build a ‘passive haus’ green home without the eco-bling (expensive gadgets) to how we keep the lights on.

The next eco build will be on Tuesday 1st - Thursday 3rd March 2011 at the ExCel Centre, London. See www.ecobuild.co.uk for more details about this year’s event and next year’s event. You can also contact Shaun (see newsletter contacts) for more details.
